Kathmandu: Former U.S. President Joe Biden, 82, has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, which has reportedly spread to his bones, worsening his condition. His office released a statement on Sunday, confirming the diagnosis following a medical consultation last week due to urination difficulties.

Doctors discovered the condition after conducting several tests on Friday. Biden had previously undergone treatment for skin cancer in 2023, when a basal cell carcinoma lesion was removed from his chest.

Following the news, current U.S. President Donald Trump offered condolences, saying, "Melania and I are saddened to learn of his illness. We pray for Jill Biden and her family and wish Joe Biden a speedy and full recovery."

Common Yet Deadly Disease in Men
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men in the U.S. and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths, according to the American Cancer Society. The prostate gland, weighing around 30 grams, plays a crucial role in the male reproductive system by producing a fluid that protects and transports sperm. It also functions as a mechanical switch between urination and ejaculation.

Biden’s Political Career and Withdrawal
Joe Biden, who defeated Trump in 2020, had initially planned to run again, but later withdrew from the 2024 presidential race, citing age and mental fitness concerns. He endorsed his then-Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor.

Trump, three years younger than Biden, defeated Harris in November’s election, becoming president for a second term. Biden remains the oldest person to have assumed the U.S. presidency, inaugurated at the age of 78 years and 220 days.

Since Trump is ineligible for a third term under the U.S. Constitution, Biden’s age record will stand for several more years.
